  • Scope expanded to include commercial icemakers. Includes appliances using flammable refrigerants and R-744 up to limits stated in cl 22.110. Excludes split systems with a flammable refrigerant charge exceeding 150 g in any circuit.
  • Additional requirements for icemakers (marking, operating condition).
  • Additional marking requirements for appliances incorporating larger volumes of flammable refrigerants (e.g., minimum room floor area).
  • Previous exemption relating to "persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities ..." is removed.  Instructions now required to be included (clause 7.12).
  • Additional warnings required for R-744 appliances with remote refrigerant units and for appliances incorporating flammable refrigerants (clause 7.12.1).
  • Normal operation test conditions revised to allow for remote refrigerant units. User adjustable temperature settings and controls set to give lowest temperatures and not short-circuited (clause 11).
  • Additional mechanical strength test (5 J impact test) for appliances incorporating more than 150 g of flammable refrigerant (clause 21.103).
  • Additional pressure test for R-744 appliances (cl 22.7).
  • Updates to glass panel impact test to clarify when a panel is considered to be accessible (clause 22.103).
  • Revised constructional requirements related to "flammable refrigerant" to allow more than 150 g in certain situations.
  • Additional for appliances with flammable refrigerant charge exceed 150 g (cl 22.116-121).
  • Software used in programmable electronic circuits requirements for detection of fault or errors added (Annex R).
  • Additional annex for evaluating gas concentration outside of the appliance (Annex CC).

AS/NZS 60335.2.96: 2020

Household and similar electrical appliances – Safety – Part 2.96: Particular requirements for flexible sheet heating elements for room heating

  • Scope revised to specifically include heating elements incorporated into floor and walls (below 1.2 m or above 2.3 m) and ceiling. (Previous wording was "incorporated into the building to heat the room in which they are located").
  • Scope exclusion for heating appliances intended to be used under a carpet is revised to reference 60335-2-106.
  • Standard now considers installation in a concrete "wall" or ceiling as well as concrete "floor.”
  • Additional marking requirement for the flexible heating element to be marked with e reference number or other means of identification if the appliance is supplied with separate controls, with detachable controls or without a control (cl 7.1).
  • Additional instructions warnings.
  • Additional instructional and constructional requirements for heating units to be installed into a wall; They EITHER must incorporate a metallic shield, OR be class III, OR be constructed with a base material and metallically screened electrically insulated heating wires, OR must be installed with an electrical conductive screen that is installed towards the covering materials and connected to earth of fixed installation (cl 7.12.106).
  • Additional constructional requirement for heating units that are intended to be installed below 1.2 m. They need to be either Class III or fitted with an earthed conductive screen (clause 22.106).  Additional tests to verify effectiveness of the protection system (clause 22.106.1). Protective controls or components needed to meet these requirements shall be supplied with the appliance (cl 24.102).
  • Additional normal operation test conditions for heating units to be installed in timber walls (cl 11.2.105 and 11.2.106) or concrete walls (cl 11.2.107).
  • Additional abnormal test conditions for wall installations (cl 19.2).
  • Figures 110 and 111 added to show setup configuration for timber wall testing. Figures 112 and 113 added to show setup configuration for concrete wall testing.
